Richard A. Poppa, CAE, AAI
Richard A. Poppa (pronounced Poppy) is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of New York, Inc. In this role, he serves as the chief staff executive of IIABNY and its subsidiaries, and has day-to-day oversight of the operations.
Prior to his role with IIABNY he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Independent Insurance Agents of America (1989-1996) where he was charged with the responsibility of the day-to-day management of the Association’s headquarters in Alexandria, VA. Dick has also served as Executive Vice President of the IIA of Indiana (1986-1989) and as Administrative Vice President of the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of California (1984-1985). Dick served the first six years of his trade association career with the Insurance Institute of Indiana, a domestic property-casualty insurance trade association with its headquarters in Indiana.
Dick is a native Hoosier and grew up on the south side of Indianapolis, attending Southport High School. He graduated from Ball State University in May 1974 with a BS in Political Science.
In June 1974, Dick and Kimberly Parks were married, and Dick began a brief career in the restaurant management business, as Kim finished her education in Muncie, IN. Dick and Kim moved to Indianapolis where he accepted a role with the Indiana Department of Commerce as press aide to then-Lieutenant Governor Robert D. Orr. Following several moves up in the Department of Commerce, Dick accepted his first trade association position with the Insurance Institute of Indiana.
Dick has continued his education both in insurance and association management. He received the Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation from the American Society of Association Executives, and the Accredited Advisor in Insurance (AAI) designation from the Insurance Institute of America. In addition, Dick has completed a six-year series of one-week courses in trade association management at the University of Notre Dame School of Continuing Education, and completed two courses in Association Finance and Management at George Washington University. He has also completed three parts of the CPCU designation and several insurance industry education courses.
Dick has been involved in numerous professional and civic activities, serving two years as president and five years on the board of the Brittany (VA) Homeowners Association; as a member of ASAE’s Associations Advance America, CAE Examination, and Membership Committees (formerly Chairman of Membership); as President of the Perry Township (IN) School Board, the Indiana Society of Association Executives, the Indianapolis area Ball State University Alumni Association, the Skaneateles Rotary Club, and the Independent Agent Association Executives (IAAE). In July 1989, Dick was recognized as the Association Executive of the Year by the Indiana Society of Association Executives. Dick is an Elder and Session member of the First Presbyterian Church of Skaneateles, a member of the Empire State Society of Association Executive Board of Directors, a member of the ASAE CAE Commission, and a board member of the Skaneateles Rotary Club.
