October’s journal with the ubiquitous designer, Renee E. Coombs
This month I have chosen to decorate a dining room…it is a harvest month.
Day 1 – Trash the blahs…prepare the canvas! Empty the room, time to start over! Paint the walls white. I am seeing layers of white.
Day 2 – Go shopping! I love to shop at flea markets, antique stores, and tag sales. Today I am looking for a dining room table and 6 chairs, plus an attractive side board that I can paint white.
My shopping list:
Table
4-6 chairs with seats that I can cover with material
Side board
1 gallon of primer
1 gallon of gloss white latex enamel paint
Brushes
Sand paper
Day 3 – Boring! Prepare the table to paint. Sand and fix legs of table.
Time to paint: One coat primer – allow to dry (read instructions).
One coat gloss white latex enamel paint.
Day 4 - Shop for curtains. Purple curtains with black iron rods are on my list today.
Day 5 – To do list: Hang purple curtains onto the black iron rods to windows.
Day 6 - Prepare the chairs to paint.
Time to paint: One coat primer – allow to day (read instructions).
One coat gloss white latex enamel paint.
Day 7 – MORE PAINTING! Prepare the sideboard to paint.
Time to paint: One coat primer – allow to day (read instructions).
One coat gloss white latex enamel paint.
Day 8 - Mirrors, mirrors on the wall!!!! Hunt for mirrors- any shape, any size, at least seven.
Day 9 – Look at me today. Paint mirror frames white.
Day 10 – I love my job! Who could be so lucky?? Shop for fabulous chintz orange and green floral material for newly painted dining room chairs.
Day 11- Scatter mirrors on the wall. (Secure and hang all 7 mirrors)
Day 12 – I will pretend to be Geddes today! Armed with my 35 mm camera I plan on capturing some critical scenes of life. (Need black and white film).
Day 13- Drop off film to develop. NOTE: Have shots developed in different sizes. (5x7; 8x10; and 11” x 15).
Day 14- Library day – looking for quote to stencil on dining room table or on wall over door or embellish the edge of a wood floor. Maybe I will or maybe I will not use this idea, this time.
Day 15- I will use this idea and I will place quote over doorway.

Need black paint, stencils and patience.
Day 16 – Butt day- Apply fabric to chair seats.
Day 17 – Shop for area rug. A rug with colors of purple, orange, greens and touches of black.
Day 18 – Roll out the rug in dining room. FANTASTIC! It should not be too big, not too small, but just right.
Day 19 – AND THERE WAS LIGHT….. Goal – AMBIANCE.
Celestial silver chandelier appears before my eyes. Searching for electrician to hang it.
Day 20 – Need to visit the Farmers Market…in search for three perfect pumpkins to nest in middle of the dining room table. Need to buy two cans of gloss silver spray paint.
Day 21 – Appointment with licensed electrician to hang silver chandelier. Wow, decorating does have its rewards.
Day 22 – Take photos to frame shop to have photos framed. White frames black matting.
Day 23 – PUMPKIN SPRAYN’ DAY. …spray paint pumpkins with silver spray paint, let dry, spray again.
Day 24 - Buy tablecloth for table and it must be teal with long fringe
Day 25 - Take tall silver vase to florist to have 3 1/2 dozen white roses arranged in vase. Have arrangement delivered when room is completed.
Day 26 – This will be the day! To place the dining room furniture into the room.
Toss in the table, fling in the chairs and slide in the sideboard.
Day 27 - Pick up photos from frame shop. Hang all photos on one wall.
Day 28 – Shopping list: Silver silverware, crystal goblets, purple napkins and white ironstone place setting for six.
Day 29 – To do list: place table cloth on table, along with silver silverware, crystal goblets, purple napkins and white ironstone dishes.
Day 30 – Place roses on side board and three silver pumpkins in middle of table.
Day 31 - COMPLETE ROOM AND ADMIRE!
